Advantages of low profile antenna

Low profile antenna is one with small width of the substrate. What are the advantage of having a low profile antenna. Did it also suppress surface waves in the antenna.

Yes. Thinner substrate will reduce surface wave. When the substrate is too thick (>5 to 10% of wavelength), surface wave will cause signficant loss.

I had an idea tooo about surface waves. So in turn the gain will increase. will it affect any other characteristics of antenna like pattern.
