I need a programmer for ATXMEGA128A1(8-bit) and AT32UC3A (32-bit Controller)...

These devices require the a programmer/debugger from the following list:

AVR Dragon

AVR JTAGICE mkII

JTAGICE 3

I've heard varying reports concerning clones and their viability and would therefore recommend purchasing an AVR Dragon over the purchase of a clone.

There are several distributors located in India which stock the above ATMEL programmer/debuggers, the AVR Dragon would be the cheapest option out of the three.

Thanks for reply...

I searched AVR Dragon on internet and found some topics.

and came to a conclusion that...
We have to make a small prototype with the controller to program and then have to connect this with the avr dragon and program it.....

Please tell me whether i am right or wrong...

And i can i program any avr micro-controller with this avr dragon...

Please reply soon i have to purchase it as soon as possible..

The dragon supports the following interfaces described below, therefore it can program/debug most Atmel devices which offer these interfaces.

Detailed information concerning the AVR Dragon and its use, is available in the AVR Studio Help System.

The following tutorial demonstrates in-circuit programming/debugging using the SPI, JTAG, PDI interfaces.

Introducing AVR Dragon

Also note it offers HVSP and PP as well.

Thanks for your reply...

Few minutes back i contacted the Atmel Distributor in India and they told me that...
we can't program the ATXMEGA128A1(8-bit) and AT32UC3A (32-bit Controller)... with the AVR Dragon

and told me to buy AVR Dragon 3..
I don't know what is this now...

Can you please tell me what is this AVR Dragon 3...

Rubbish!

It sound like they are trying to sell you a JTAGICE 3 which is three or four times the price of an AVR Dragon. As far as I know there is no AVR Dragon 3, but I could be wrong.

The following is the Atmel's AVR Dragon device compatibility page, both the ATXMEGA128A1(8-bit) and AT32UC3A (32-bit Controller) are listed:

AVR Dragon Compatible Devices

A more up to date list of compatible devices is available in the AVR Studio.

Thanks for your reply....

I will try to contact them again and will explain them and will try to get more knowledge on this subject...

As per the information i gathered i think you are absolutely right....

I dont think there are different versions of AVR Dragon.

It should be Jtagice 3
