"The elements within a circuit will either control the flow of electric energy or respond to it. Those elements which control the flow of electric energy are known as active elements and those which dissipate or store the electric energy are passive elements."

If I were a semiconductor device, I'd want to be an active element =]
 

Hi,

Active elements are those which does not depend on other elements for operation eg.Transistors etc.
Passive elements are those which depends on others for elements
eg.Resistors, capacitors, inductors
 

Active elements supply energy or control the flow of energy.
Passive elements dissipiate energy.
Ex: Voltage sourcees,transistors etc are active elements
Resistors and other linear elements like capacitor,inductor or any appliance is a passive element

really relays and solenoids are active devices...how it is eecs4ever.....

passive components--
A device that does not have any impact on the electrical signals or the data that passes through it. See active component.

Examples of passive components include resistors, capacitors, inductors, and diodes. The classic crystal radio receiver, an AM radio receiver that does not require any electricity, is made entirely from passive components.

active component--
A device that adds intelligence in some manner to the signal or data that passes through it. For example, in networking, an active hub regenerates fading input pulses into new, strong output pulses. In contrast, a passive hub is just a junction box that does not affect the passing data.

Examples of active components are transistors, thyristors, diodes and valves.


Note: the diode can be a passive or active component.

is there any proof exists for your say that AM radio receiver don't any power to work......
 

A crystal radio is entirely passive (a coil type antenna, a capacitor, a diode, and a speaker). The power for the radio actually comes from the AM radio signal itself. The coil converts the radio signal into a voltage signal. The coil and the capacitor tune the circuit to the right channel. The diode demodulates the signal and the speaker makes it audible. No batteries required or power supply required.
