Probably not. Converting to a DC output could be done more efficiently by using a SMPS but the extra losses converting it back to AC would probably bring it back to the same level as a simple transformer. It would certainly be far more complicated and more expensive! You can get quite good efficiency if you use a toroidal transformer.
