Integrated circuit (IC) sockets come in many variations: Solder tail, gull-wing, stub tail, compliant tail and low-profile. IC sockets are valuable for customer applications requiring periodic chip update, upgrade or field replacement. Replacing an IC chip from a socket eliminates potential PCB damage associated with desoldering repair.
A screw machine IC socket is an assembly of multiple precision-machined receptacles, populated into a ROHs compliant molded insulator. Typically screw machine socket receptacles feature two piece construction of a precision-machined brass shell and a precision-stamped beryllium copper contact clip. Typically multi-finger contact clips are precision stamped beryllium copper, heat-treated for near-steel strength and highly conductive. Contact clip fingers not only apply retentive mechanical forces onto the mating pin, they score the pin surface to achieve a gas-tight superior electrical connection. Screw machine precision-machined socket receptacles are known for their long durability and high-performance.
Four major advantages of screw machine IC sockets are:
1. The precision-machined brass shells are seamless in construction, this prevents solder from wicking or contamination from entering inside the receptacle.
2. Cost savings are realized by minimizing gold usage only where required: the contact clip surface.
3. Solderability is improved by tin-plating the outer brass shell.
4. The contact clip forces inside a screw machine socket receptacle can be modified by substitution of another compatible contact clip with lower forces.
