Hello Everyone-
newby here
what is the least expensive way to run a 380 volt motor from a 220 volt supply?
many thanks

fred

Hi,

What power?
DC?
AC? 1 phase ? 3 phase?

***
for DC:
* step up converter
* new motor (in exchange), second hand motor
* ?

for 1 ph AC:
* autotransformer
* new motor (in exchange), second hand motor

Hello Klaus
220 volt AC power input ( domestic wall plug)
required to have 3 phase output to run a 380 volt .55 kw electric motor
many thanks

Hi,

1 phase input?
3 phase output?

Then look for a cheap VFD and check specifications.

Hi,

OP talks about 380V motor, with steinmetz you get maximum 230V (symmetric) across the coils.
The motor may run, but the performance will be low. High current, low cos(phi), low torque.

Maybe autotransformer and steinmetz... but is it worth it?

sorry Klaus- I dont know what "steinmetz" is?
Your motor has three wires, right? Connect one to the line and the other to the neutral. Finally connect the third wire to either the line or the neutral via an AC capacitor. The value of the capacitor will depend on the power rating of the motor.

This will get the motor running.

What does the boilerplate on the motor say?
