20x4 LCD shows Black boxes

I checked your MCU and I think it is 100% pin compatible with PIC16f877a MCU
If you have or if you can simply buy one I can send all files. That will help to you some extend
 

I'll be able to ask for a PIC16F88 from a friend.

Which version you are using with Micro C, I mean PRO or Lite
