why 1x4 u can go directly 1 pin for 1 key and check by p0lling.

agree with @embpic. It is better to use 4 keys in on different pins rather than using 1x4 keypad.

And no one gives direct C code, you have to work on it and if you face problem, you can ask here.

yes 4 push button switch will do !
to connect pin required for 1x4 keypad are more than 4 push button switches.;-)
Add a pull up or down resistor according to your requirement!
