It depends... in which area you are working...DSP at present is key thing in many applications like Wireless industry, multimedia applications...etc

yeah software defined radio is one.

speech and video r as usual have some boom now
in communication, its OFDMA

when it comes to research, its "matlab" used for simulations

Hi,

Lot of DSP work in MIMO communication, specially PHY layer techniques of the system.

Cross layer approach is another issue where DSP is being done.
