8051 vs. PIC

I am just learning about microcontrollers. There seems to be 2 main types talked about: 8051 and PIC. What are the similarities/differences? Is one more suited for certain types of applications over the other?

Thanks Ian. Geez. It's right under my nose. And can you believe I did a search?

8051 vs. PIC

I am learning 8051 and simulating the IP core, which was downloaded from https://www.opencores.org/, at the same the core is writed by Verilog build on OC8051. But the core has some wrong.

I think I can study 8051 and pipeline by simulating the core, because the oc8051 is pipeline.

Here is a nice presentation paper from Microchip Masters 2004 Conference

Come to the light: Learning the basics of PICmicro microcontroller from an 8051 perspective.
