convert power supply voltage

Hi,

what type of circuit could be used to convert a 0 - 5v DC supply to a 0 - 10v supply. I have an application where 0 - 5 volts is required most of the time, but sometimes 0 - 10 volts is required. With the 5v application, 5v cannot be exceeded, and so I am looking for some type of inline conversion circuit that can be inserted and removed as required. About 2mA is all that is required.

This would be a consumer application where the 10v module would be placed inline with the 5v supply, as needed. An external power supply is ok, but what type of circuit configuration can be used to perform a linear conversion.

For that low current, you could use a charge-pump doubler, but the lowest input voltage they will operate is about 1.5V for a 3V minimum output.
Would that be acceptable or does it have to go to zero volts?

I agree.
You say "power supply" and you say "0 ...5V".
You have to admit that "0V" can't operate as power supply.

Take a piece of paper and a pencil to show us what you want to do.

Yes has to go to 0 volts.

It is possible to build a voltage doubler circuit, but if it needs to work with input (signal) voltages down to 0V, then you need an additional power supply.

You can´t build a voltage doubler that operates down to 0V supply voltage.

If the 10V has to go to zero volts, then it needs to be powered from whatever is powering the 0-5V output.
What is that?
 

Maybe it's easier to start with a 10V supply, and subtract 5V as a switchable option?
This can be done with a zener diode (or combination of led's, diodes, zeners). You can switch it in or out of circuit with a transistor.

...Not thought this through much: How about adapting something like the LM317 0 to 30V schematic from the TI LM117 datasheet, January 2014? It would require a voltage inverter, like the 7660, and I guess it wouldn't need -10V out just for +10V out. Perhaps using an op amp voltage follower at the input to control a switch transistor or something along those lines, and switching over to a similar set up but using a voltage doubler IC with to the (0 to) 5 to 10V via a comparator at say 4.95V? Not thought out much at all but your requirements are quite difficult: switching at 5V while also having a separate 10V from the 5V, oof, puzzle...

Agree with this.

Give yourself 10V. Use a cheap buck converter or regulator to generate 5. Then you'll have 10 and 5 available to use as needed.
 

You could use an LT3080 regulator from a 12V supply.
It can be adjusted from 0V to 10V with a single variable resistor.
You can switch in a fixed resistor in parallel with the variable resistor to limit the voltage to 5V or 10V as desired.
