I'm new to DSP circuitry (I'm an old vacuum-tube guy), and I'm wondering what are some good options for rotary and linear dials that act kind of like multiple position switches (i.e., say about 25 different points of selection)? Would an opto encoder work for this? What are my options?

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

A really confusing post.
When someone talks about rotary switches I expdct informations like:
* count of positions
* count of poles
* current capabiliity
* contact resistance
* usage...

But you talk about DSP, tubes...

What do you realky need?

I I understand the matter a typical multiple position rotary switch would require each output to be connected to a pin on the microcontroller, but an optical encoder would only require that two outputs are connected to the microcontroller. I'm wanting to learn about my options. So far all that I can think of are old fashioned multiple position rotary switches and modern optical encoders. Are there other options?

Hi,

With "25 different points of selection" you mean "25 pulses per revolution"?
25 is an odd number, this is not usual.
--> I recommend to read some informations /datasheets of rotary encoders.
Are there other options?
--> just look at your audio/video equippment at home.
It depends what you want to do with it.
There are:
* code switches
* push butoon
* capacitve switches (QTouch)
* IR remote input
* any interface like SPI, I2C..
