why crystal is connected to microcontroller in every microcontroller circuits?
 

The Micros need a square wave to run thier internal clocks, by using the appropriate crystal you can set the speed at which the micros run.

A crystal is one of the most accurate timebases, but you can use a ceramic resonator, R/C or external oscillator.

Many of the newer micros also have an inbuilt oscillator option as well, while good for many uses, is not quiet as accurate as a crystal.
