Hi

I have read that, coded modulation is used to obtain coding gain in band-limited-channels without any bandwidth expansion. The question is: if we can get coding gain without any bandwidth expansion, why then do not we use coded modulation all the time? Is the gain obtained is small compared to the extra redundant symbols to the information sequence? is the decoding complexity of coded modulation is too high?

Thanks in advance
