what software tool for layout and simulation for novice

what software tool for layout and simulation a novice should use; please refer me some tool(except magic and microwind);where can I get them. also please refer eda tools for only windows operating system. What are good books for layout and vlsi design. send me link.

As to layout ,i refer to the Cadence!But it is difficult to get the free copyright!
 

Hello;
I advise you to learn Protel99 or protel DXP. Although learning them may be difficult for a novice, but if you begin with them, you can work better in your future works.
