stepper motor jamming

hello friends ,

please suggest what could be the possible reasons for a stepper motor jamming .

1. there is no load on motor it is free running mode.i mean no mechanical thing connected to it.

2.The card is heating (stepper motor driver).

Thanks and regards

Re: stepper motor jamming

If you experience this problem when the speed reaches a certain level, it's probably because of something called "mid-range resonance". It causes jamming at some speed levels. Try to avoid this region by increasing the frequency rapidly when you reach there. Microstepping also helps, with the cost of reduced torque. Some industrial stepper motor controllers have an additional feature "electronic damping", but I don't know how it works. You can also use mechanical damping. You probably get a better performance with some load. Try it.

Heating of H bridge ICs and current sensing resistors is normal. Linear voltage regulators (like 7805) may also heat. But other things should be cool. You may need passive cooling devices.

are you sure the motor is not damaged, check the bearings etc., switch OFF the motor and rotate by hand and see if it gets stuck.
