I am kinda newbie as well, but i guess it depends on:
1. If u target to implement on any FPGA board, normally there are memory device on the board, u may directly look for information about that board for how to connect the memory device;
2. If u just plan to try and simulate, find a datasheet of a memory device and design your code according to the timing diagram specification on that datasheet.
These are normally what i do, pls enlight me if i was doing the wrong way
