Re: smd

Hi

The art of mounting devices on component boards involves two technologies .They are
• PMT – Pin Mount Technology
• SMT – Surface Mount Technology
The devices that use Pin Mount Technology are called Pin Mount Devices and the devices which use Surface Mount Technology are called Surface Mount Devices.

Surface mount technology (SMT) is a method for constructing electronic circuits in which the components are mounted directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs).

PMD devices include DIPs, PGAs, TOs, etc.

SMD devices include BGAs, SOICs, SOTs, SOPs etc.

Re: smd

Also some of the SMT devices can be easily solder by hand without expensive tools. Furhtermore most of the sizes are in mils. For instance a 1204 resistor is 120mil by 40mil.
