how esd mats work

I am using MGA-87563 in an LNA project. There is a link in the datasheet which emphasizes on use of proper ESD protection equipment including ESD mats. We do have ESD mats in our lab on all the test benches, but how do they work? How should we use them?

how esd mat works

They are actually conductive, although their resistance is EXTREMELY high, and they are connected to earth. Hence, no charge can accumulate, since it is directed to earth.

there will two clips at the corners of the ESD mat.Clip a wire to that and connect the other end of that to the ground/earth.
you should be having a ESD wrist strap also..wear it while handling ESD senistive devices and clip its other end to the ESD mat.
