-> GNU Toolchain + QT (for powerfull xwindow and frontend applications)
4. For File Server.
-> Samba, Kernel NFS, ftpd...
5. For Networking (router, Repeater, etc)
-> Linux capabilities.
6. For Web server.
-> Apache.
7. For Database Server.
-> MySQL
8. For Graphical Design.
-> PovRay (I know that Maya or 3DStudio will be better and more professional but for me PovRay rules
9. For CAD (Mechanical Application).
10. For Office Application.
-> Open office or StarOffice

I have this IEEE card connected to a combi -stove with ceramic-plated walls, and I now really need the community to help me decide which software I will use to program the stove for an irish stew.

Here is the answer Johan, the best application is the one that is in your distribution, until the point when you feel you are working in awkward ways and using the wrong tool for the job. That will probably happen, because the default app is most of the time the one will lots of GUI and intergration, but that is not what you need for intensive usage.
You take the usual word versus LaTeX versus Frame as an example. There is no "best", there is the tool, the job to be done, and the guy. The chemistry between those 3 is not the same for everyone. Maybe not the same for anyone. And that is where linux is good: there are defaults, there are standards, but there is no forced normalisation. For the tool, that is. Because licensing is another story...
