How to cycle through keys on keypad???

How can i multiplex keys.
I meant something like on telephone keypad,
a key has 4 characters in it depending on mode.

I want to cycle up to 3 or 4 characters on a key.


maybe I need counter??

i'm doing it in C , pic16
