Wide input Switching mode power supply ?

I need to design a 230-480VAC input/ 17VDC-1A power supply in very compact size.

Any idea's where to start?

You can modify the following schematic to obtain 17V / 1A. I sugest you to use a bipolar - vmos cascode structure for the power switch because a high voltage vmos is expensive.

Here is my project. The archive contains the project Prot.ddb. I am sure that you know with what kind of program can you open it! If you do not have that program you can use the other files from the archive.
