With regard to the posted project link -- The idea of using a standard IR detector module is a good one, since it detects modulated light (usually 40kHz) -- that will help to reduce interference from ambient light sources.
The circuit they used to generate the IR could be simpler if you are going to power it from batteries -- you can make a 40kHz oscillator from a LM555 very easily.
