for ASIC, you may see a fantastic book "Application Specific Integtrated Circuit" by Sebestian John Smith published by Pearson Asea (Low price edition)

You can order for Modelsim SE full version for 20000 USD.
If you are not interseted in paying this big amount, then look for some pirated version.

in my view u better a course on vlsi, coz if u takeup a course then u will know from basics if not u feel really difficult to progress in that field.
and u may not understand what for wht.
so my sujjession is to takeup a course in good institutions.
