replace ups battery with car battery

hi,

i am going to replace the UPS sealed leadacid cell battery with old car battery. the rating of ups battery is 12V 7.2Ah. while the car battery is 12V 55Ah.

i certainly would not overload the converter with new battery installed, just the same computer but wanted to see if car battery could enhance the backup time !!!

is there any problem with it ????

ups battery replacement with car battery

Your car battery should work just fine.

Be aware that the charging circuit which was designed for a much smaller battery is going to take a lot longer to charge the car battery. Longer operation means more heat from the charging circuit - hopefully it is designed for prolonged operation with elevated temperatures.

Be aware of the increased safety hazards. The car battery is going to creep acid vapor from the cell vents to the surrounding area. That's what causes the crusty white deposits you see on the terminals and around the automobile battery box. The car battery is also going to vent potentially explosive hydrogen while charging and discharging - the higher the charge or discharge rate, the more hydrogen. You need to avoid open sparks or flame in the area immediately around the battery - particularly the vent caps.

car battery cell problem

Hi
Car batery will definitely improve the backup, as the Ah is more. You need to put back more than what you have used to charge the 55ah battery in your case. This may be even more than the required Ah considering the efficiency of the battery and the charger. SMF batteries are charged in a different way than lead acid battery with flooded cells due to the inherent construction and the sealing of the cells. Check your UPS charging voltage. This should be betwen 13.5 to 14.4 VDC.
Even SMF battery charging voltages very with application.
Do contact me in case of issues.
Thanks

car battery charging fumes

UPS is not constructed in a way to handle long time load . Transformators are not choosen to work in continuos mode operation. Then switching MOsFET's hs to be put onto radiators. better will be increase number of MOSFET's connected in parallel if UPS is t work longer than expected.

Then it comes to charge current you have to adjust to get battery into charged state - should match battery capacity as well. Then you have to consult battery manuals regarding charged battery voltage (when you have to stop charge because of battery has been fully charged). But if not wrong it is not much critical .

As already mentioned, UPS (especially those cheap ones) is not designed to run on batteries for a long time. You may destroy it if you let it run on car battery for a much longer time then it could run with original one. Then you have the problem with acid fumes getting out of car battery while charging. It is both corrosive and not healthy for humans. Then charging time will be MUCH longer then for original battery.
Pay attention to all of that.

opening a sealed car battery

In new inbuild ups most of them use small transformers rated than the actual power to reduce the cost. they ment to use for 10 to 15 minitus. the transformer is working overload. if you are working it for more time it may get overheat and destroy it.

replacing a transformer instead of a ups battery

In my opinion, you should keep the original structure of the UPS. Just use the car battery with new charger for it (this new charger will ensure full charging the battery in the proper time), and a relay to switch the battery from the internal one to the new one when power fails.

ON the other hand, if the car battery is not the seal one, so be careful of the acid, it may harm you, your family and stuff. Try to use the seal one either.
