Help!! DC motor encoder

Hi,
I got 3 DC motors with encoder for my project. But I have no idea related to encoder.

1.
I got a DC motor (Pittman 9413D319 3140-0665 REV-H) which has an encoder. But I don't know how that encoder works. I found no datasheet or any reference related to this motor. I can see 4 pins out form the encoder. I've got few help from Mr. Brian Foley and from his website.

Still I have no idea how to get the information from the encoder.
Can I get pulse via microcontrollers' general I/O pin?
There are two output pins. what pin is for what purpose?

I also got other two motors (PC357XLG and C6680-60025) with 6 wires. wire configuration is-
brown, yollow,black,greeen, orange, red

Here which wire is for what purpose? How would I test that?

would anyone please refer to any website related to this encoder? or example program ? or any schematic?

Did anybody implement quadrature decoder using your microcontroller?? Would anyone share your code and the basic idea?? what's the point?
