I would like to experiment with some home made capacitors using industrial grade shrink wrap (polyethylene) and aluminum foil. The poly is 3mils thick (.0003 inches) I'm not sure of the foils thickness but I'm going to use a guestimate of 3mils thickness as well. I'm gonna start out with one or two square feet at first, but I was wondering what kind of voltage rateing should I expect? What other capacitor charactoristics should I expect?

i think you should expect the standing voltage of the 3-mil polyethylene thickness before breakdown.

may be the Q factor of Capacitor reflect good estimating about its quality
