i think the best one for very beginners is the book for lathi, than sklar.

and if you want more indetail than go for haykin and proakis.

For me, "Fundamentals of Telecommunications" by Freeman would be a good candidate.

The book provides good and easy to understand explanation of the concepts behind telecommunication systems and technologies.
