There is a big community in Germany and Swiss dealing with it; try **broken link removed** but its in German.
What i like more is the idea to make it with DLPs. Here is a good flash demo which explains how it works.
I would like to build a DLP projector it but i dont have enough skill.
I don't even know if you can buy just one DLP from Texas Instruments

It's impossible to implement DLP at home.

Currently I'm working on a DLP design project with a commercial company I could say it's impossible to do yourself.

There are very big BGA ASIC chips for controlling BGA (Made by Texas Instruments and they give it to only big manufacturers), the lamp is special, it is "in phase" with the video image. There is a special motor which is rolling color wheel which consist of segments of different colors and this whell's rotation is very precisely controlled and feedback received to the ASIC chip. (There is an ARM cpu core in ASIC also.)

There are pizeo motors vibrating optical parts and this vibration is also "in-phase" with the video.
Optics are also custom made. I don't think you can find them in sample quantities.

Firmware, test software are also only for serious big customers.

i am still studying and i am not as experienced in making things as you.
but i don't still really believe it is impossible; yes its a complex and precise system maybe.
for all the guys here still studying it would be fun to make something cool like that;
i think making the mechanics working really in phase would not be simple; but as you said feedback would do it.
but maybe you are right and i am just dreaming to much
