I found a problem that affected early Epson Printers and possibly any older Bubble Jet Printer.
The problem is at first switch-on it starts to initialise then makes a high pitched whirring sound associated with what sounds like gears stripping, then all the lights stay on in error mode.
This can be intermittent and several printers I had did this.
Epson Stylus Colour 640.
Epson Stylus Photo 700.

The Print Head chrome(shiny) rod assembly has no oil on it! This is the chrome rod at the top of the print head assembly that runs horizontally, the print head moves across this guide. The noises are the stepper motor slipping on the excessive load!

There is a felt pad and oil reservoir inside the printhead plastic assembly that lubricates the rod, but over time it has run out. It is very hard to get at! only by removal of the printhead allows access.

Fix: Apply sparingly, some fine oil (like sewing machine oil ) and apply it to the shiny rod on top left and along across to the print head assembly. Try powering up the printer again, it should work and initialse normally.

Just apply a drop or two of oil to this rod every couple of months and it should last the life of the printer.
