Hi,

How else do you call it?
The Y capacitors may/will cause (additional) current on the Earth wire (to keep HF EMI voltage noise low).
And even at line frequency they cause current. Unwanted current.

Klaus

Thanks, but that would not be classified as "leakage"?
Of course Y capacitor current is classified leakage. Leakage regulations are the most important restriction when choosing Y capacitor size for mains filters.

The "Y capacitor current" we would say is the normal capacitive current and is V/Z.

"Leakage" current in a capacitor, pertains, i thought, to "bad current"...due to the imperfection of the capacitor manufacture?

Hi,

Let's say the equivalent to "leakage current" here is "unwanted current"... current not necessary for the function.

For a capacitor the leakage current is the "self discharge current".
For an SMPS the Earth current is the unwanted = leakage current.

Klaus

Thanks, sorry i thought you were going to say ....
"For an SMPS the Earth current is the unwanted = leakage current, plus the capacitive current." ?
