Earth leakage current in offline smps

    Hello,
Is the earth leakage current in this PSU a little high at 500uA?

    https://www.xppower.com/portals/0/pdfs/SF_ASB110.pdf

What might be causing this much leakage?

    Y-capacitors?

Re: Earth leakage current in offline smps

Thanks, but that would not be classified as "leakage"?

Re: Earth leakage current in offline smps

    Hi,

How else do you call it?
The Y capacitors may/will cause (additional) current on the Earth wire (to keep HF EMI voltage noise low).
And even at line frequency they cause current. Unwanted current.

Of course Y capacitor current is classified leakage. Leakage regulations are the most important restriction when choosing Y capacitor size for mains filters.

The "Y capacitor current" we would say is the normal capacitive current and is V/Z.

"Leakage" current in a capacitor, pertains, i thought, to "bad current"...due to the imperfection of the capacitor manufacture?

Re: Earth leakage current in offline smps

    Hi,

Let's say the equivalent to "leakage current" here is "unwanted current"... current not necessary for the function.

For a capacitor the leakage current is the "self discharge current".
For an SMPS the Earth current is the unwanted = leakage current.

Re: Earth leakage current in offline smps

Thanks, sorry i thought you were going to say ....
"For an SMPS the Earth current is the unwanted = leakage current, plus the capacitive current." ?
