Gilbert Mixer as phase detector.

Hi,

I am trying to design an analog phase detector. I have read some papers and in all of them dual double balanced gilbert mixer is being used. Is that only to prevent DC offset. Can we use single balanced or douuble balanced gilbert mixer?
