Hi,

I have a question regarding PMSM AND BLDC Motors. What are the problems which are not cleared in both of these motors technology till yet? And what are the future development prospects in these both drives?

Tq

Motors have evolved considerably and traditional motors are rugged, simple in design and are highly reliable. They can be run with DC or AC without any fancy electronics.

BLDC and PMSM motors are a new breed that use permanent magnets in the rotor body: hence they are simpler in basic construction. But the materials used in permanent magnets are relatively rare and are not widely distributed in nature. That is one reason we do not see wide adoption of these motors.

In addition, these motors are not directly excitable by either DC or AC (they do not have commutators) and this is done electronically. The electronics used is fairly complicated (although the basics are fairly straight forward) and that costs in reliability.

Modern electronics is advancing rapidly but we need to focus on magnetic materials. Simpler and low cost magnetic materials will spur the wide adoption of these motors (in spite of complex electronics that may cost a fortune for high power motors) in industry.

This is of course my personal opinion.
