Hi.
What integrated circuit would you suggest to build an aircraft band (front end) receiver ?
Ideally, programmable via USB for single fixed frequency. 108 - 140MHz
-No demodulation or audio stages needed if they are built-in-
Only for carrier detection application.
 

Of interest to hackers are articles telling how to modify an ordinary FM radio (max freq 108 MHz) so it brings in higher frequencies. It might not tune the entire 108-140 range but it can be a start.

Ordinary receivers may not behave stable at -20C to +50C operating 24/365 as needed and am after reliability.
Been looking at software defined radios; which cannot tell if would be much better, like :

But never used one; would you know if after introducing reception parameters plugged to a PC USB port and then unplugging; will the settings be kept memorized and if later 5V is supplied standalone would turn on as was preset; or needs to be connected to a PC to work ?
 

The SDR receivers are essentially DVB-T sticks and not designed for standalone operation. Besides lack of a nonvolatile configuration they also don't expose an analog signal output.

The SDR frontend chips provide an IQ baseband data stream as output, you may need additional signal processing even for a simple carrier detection application. If you have it, the versatility of these chips is hard to beat by other solutions.

You may be able to find a sub-GHz receiver or transceiver radio chip that covers the requested frequency range, but presently I'm not aware of a device that starts below 127 MHz.

Then, software defined receivers being volatile puts them out of my consideration.

To plan B; using the standard or a dedicated 'normal' receiver sheltered in the control tower, I could send via 433MHz a simple command to the landing strip equipment when carrier is detected if someone kicks the PTT.

Unless you see a plan C. (Solar powered equipment on runway must detect when a frequency is active)
