digital audio - 4066 for audio switching ?

hello,

I wanna switch audio signals (guitar pickups) with a 4066 instead of using 4PDT mechanical switches

considering I would add some dc to the signal to be around 2.5v, yet is it a good choice ?

some say yes, other say no

if no, anyone knows a better alternative ?

regards

You might want to look more at analog switch options, I
believe I have seen some meant for audio that have
features like "click and pop suppression". Also consider
a scheme where you have a preamp per pickup and mux
the outputs, maybe into a low-Z cable, for less ambient
noise?

Hi,

generally I recommend to look at tables or interactive selection guides at semiconductor manufacturers or distributors.
There you have the most recent and most detailed information - usually with direct links to the datasheets.

some say yes, other say no
as with most things "some say yes, some say no"

The 4066 isn´t bad .. and it isn´t very good....
There are other switches with dual supply, then you don´t need the DC offset (at input as well as output)
There are some with lower ON resistance, some with less distortion, some with less charge introduction...

It depends on your requirement.

Btw: I don´t call this "digital audio", because the audio signal is still analog.

found this for the preamp

TS3A44159 is 3V and lo ON res, I'll try it

Re: digital aaudio - 4066 for audio switching ?

Hi,

is 3V enough?

We don´t know what your signal level is.
Nor do we know your sorce and load impedance.

The TS3A has a lot of charge incection .. expect a good noticable "click" when switching.
Although not given in the datasheet I expect the 4066 to have less than 1/20 injected charge.

Re: digital aaudio - 4066 for audio switching ?

google says "a humbucker will probably range from 400 to 800 mV or more." (just realised I did not mention it was to switch guitar pickups signal)

datasheet "says" it has low charge injection https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/ts3a44159.pdf

lol dont even know what that is

I chose 3V cos I plan to use a teensy 3.6 (3.3V MCU)

Re: digital aaudio - 4066 for audio switching ?

Hi,

800mV ... I assume this is RMS, then this means about 1.2Vp or 2.4Vpp.
This is close to 3V...

Charge injection:
When the switch opens or closes, then an ammount of energy is pushed into the signal line.
Causing an audible plop.
