Why isn't L2 coil conducting more current? There is plenty in L1, the coupling is set to the best value and it does not matter what impedance the load to the secondary coil has - its constantly conducting neglible currents.

Is this perhaps a simulation quirk and in reality L2 would conduct far more current?

AC current is shorted by tiny reactance. Try with factor 1000 higher inductance values.
