Hi guys,

Im very much confused with this, breaking my head:roll: to narrow down a topic in PHd. Please help me and give valuable suggestions . my area is Power converters

For your Ph.D. you will not need us, you will need a supervisor. Supervisor is a fellow who stands behind and looks over your shoulders (what you are doing).

In reality, the topic actually evolves; it will be rather vague and nebulous in the beginning and first few months will be like a random walk in a forest. These few months in the beginning (and also the few months near the end) will appear miserable but you will surely get over it.

Once you discovered the real passion, you can come back and ask very specific sharp questions on a focused topic and some one here or there will be certainly there to help you.

Good luck!

Won't your Ph.D. adviser guide you to what your topic will be?
In addition, if the topic is still vague, I think its better to stay within the current research thrust of your institution.

Power converters....well , solar inverters are all the rage now........spewing out AC into the mains from the solar farms.
Also, bidirectional car battery chargers are good with all this grid balancing stuff.
Or what about good old electric motor drives.

If you are in China, what about good old switch mode powerr supplies......China makes just about all of them on the planet now.

If you really want to boil your brain..then what about the single stage PFC'd Cuk converter.

Then theres the 99% efficient power factor correctors using "solid state rectifier bridges"...(thats not there real name but ive forgotten it)

Or what about hybrid converters, which give resonant operation , but without the drawbacks of more simple resonant converters

If you like music, then what about a Class D audio amplifier.

Which university are you at.....what do they specialise in

I worked with a guy who did a phd in current regulated BLDC motor drives...but couldnt find a job in it...because most BLDC drives are voltage mode, so to speak.

What you did for your Ph.D. has only a little relation with your current scope of work. Who knows, perhaps you can join politics and become the minister for electronics?

Seriously, you have only so much of freedom during your Ph.D. days. The broad outlines are fixed and they cannot be breached. Your supervisor perhaps belongs to a previous generation and his current responsibilities are attending meetings and conferences.

But when you arrive at the market place, it is your choice. You can decide to play cricket or sing a song or dance (or make others dance) to a tune. Seriously again, your scope is much bigger and it depends on your level of confidence.

Sometimes I advice students to stress on the tool they have mastered or on the stuff they wanted to master. And both has worked (only limited extent bu then ...)

If you can find your passion within the limitations of the department and the supervisor, consider yourself lucky. Learn well the thing you always wanted to learn. And some cricket or music on the side (it will be good for the spirit or the soul).
