Mosfets kelvin source connection(power mosfet datasheet)

Hi edaboard,

I was looking for a mosfet and I found one.

This is the mosfet's datasheet : https://ixapps.ixys.com/DataSheet/IXFN50N120SK.pdf

This mosfet is good for me but what is real kelvin source connection(pin1) and what kind of connection should I do.

Re: Mosfets kelvin source connection(power mosfet datasheet)

Hi,

I assume you did not much searching.

In short:
This is for low impedance / high current signal sensing.
* connect "individual" sense traces to the MOSFET, directely to the pins. These traces should not carry any current.
* individual means you need extra (wide) traces which carry the load current, also directly connected to the MOSFET pins.
For THM: usually the sense traces are on a different layer than the high current traces.
For SMD: usually the sense traces enter the SMD pad at the opposite side than the high current traces.

MOSFET Kelvin source connection is not for sensing purposes. It's intended as separate gate driver reference node, avoiding degeneration by the source terminal and wiring inductance.
