Hi,

I am new to rectangular waveguides. In one question I am given the source freqency, relative permitivity and permeability of the dielectric material and the width and height of the rectangular waveguide. I am asked to find:

1. All possible modes that could propagate in the waveguide
2. Cut-off frequencies
3. Phase velocity and wave impedance for the lowest mode.

My attempt:
I know its a rectangular waveguide so only TE and TM waves will propagate. Then using the formulas below I can calculate the wave number.

My question:
n,m stand for "mode". How do I know what combinations to use?

Thanks!

Hi dzafar,

Since you are given the operating frequency, what you need to do is solve for the cutoff frequencies of various modes. You do this by testing a variety of values for n and m in your k_c equation, and seeing which combinations are below the operating frequency. These are the ones which propagate.
