Handling mains transients with bigger post-PFC electrolytics in offline SMPS?

…it says that SynQor believe that using an over-sized post-PFC electrolytic capacitor can result in extended lifetime protection against mains transients……
Easy Peasy replied as follows….
Bigger caps with lower ESR soak up a lot of transient energy Phase-Neutral before the volts get too high on them, this is an old trick by power electronics engineers to meet Phase-Neutral transient standards...
The thing is, these mains transients can be 1000’s of Amps, and even if only for a short time period, surely that would blow up the fine bond wires in the diodes of the mains rectifier bridge?
I just don’t see how adding extra post-PFC capacitors can help with mains transients?
