Controller Area Network is advantage or disadvantage?

    Hi,
Controller Area Network(CAN) is implemented with the mechanism like error handling & over loaded frame & fault confinement etc....

I think it is more overload for protocol to do this many of operations, is it advantage (or) disadvantage for the controller area network.

Can any one please justify my statements...........

Why Controller Area Network in automotive?

    Hi,
Why controller Area network is preferred in the automotive mostly, why not other protocols like I2C, SPI etc...

What are the special features it has compared with the other traditional protocols, in automotive which areas CAN is not recommend to use & which areas it's not recommended.

    anyone please explain about it.....

Re: Why Controller Area Network in automotive?

CAN is based on I2c with additional features.

CAN is not the only bus in autos.

there are LIN , MOST and Flexray.

CAN is based on I2c with additional features.
Never looked at it this way.
I2C is a synchronous protocol involving a clock
    CAN is an asynchronous protocol
The only similarity is the usage of dominant/recessive bus states.

Re: Controller Area Network is advantage or disadvantage?

    Hi,
CAN is the asynchronous protocol with efficient synchronous mechanism.
But CAN is overloaded with error frame, overload frame etc..is it really advantage in automotive, this much of overloaded protocol wasting more processing cycles.
