Often this is 5x-8x steady rated current unless limited by controller. Use max voltage applied Vm/ Rs = I pk for start surge and VI*t(pw50) for energy or I²Rs*t(pw50) where pw50 means pulse time for the surge current pulse width at 50% peak amplitude for an approximation. This of course depends on controller and current controls motor acceleration.

generally drivers are much smaller than motors for handling surge heat, so this means your driver Rs ought to be much less than motor Rs for a rugged design and current limit protection added for stall condition.
