Why does a servo feedback signal have ripple?

A common test procedure to test servo amplifiers is to apply a 40% duty cycle square waveform and measure the output of a servo amp.

Why use a 40% duty cycle?

Some servo amps outputs are differential, and others are referenced to the circuits ground.

What is the difference between having a servo amps that is differential?
