Alternative for relays

What could be the alternative for relays for real time application? As i have used relays before, i think they are not that reliable.
 

Semiconductor switches like MOSFETS can be one alternative. However, semiconductor switches dissipate power in the form of heat (due to the channel resistance), which you need to take care of.

If you are looking for some diagnostics too, semiconductor switches is a much more suitable option than relays. You even get smart switches which provide on-chip diagnostic circuitry.
 

You can use triacs (thyristors) instead of relays .
