    how can i calculate the AC power used by any appliance like fan with ATMega32

    I am doing my BE Engg project.

    Name: "HOME AUTOMATION & POWER MANAGEMENT"

    I want calculate the power used by each appliance in ON state. so that we can monitor power used in home. and I can draw it in MATLAB.

    I am using ATMega32 MCU in my project to switch ON/OFF each appliance.

    I think i have to calculate the current consumption by appliance.
    but i don't know how to do it.

    if any one tried this please help.

    Thank you.

    http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/m...onitors-ov.htm is a review on wattmeters, you could use the cheaper one as a check on your data collected. P = VI, so with known wall voltage you should be able to caclulate power from your current measurements. You can use a hall effect sensor to measure the current.

    Use Hall sensors such is A1302 or similar.

    @tpetar
    I think Hall sensors are used to only measure the DC current,not AC current. ????????//

    Its used for both AC and DC.
