difference between rs232 and rs485

Hi all,

What is the difference between RS232 and RS485? How can I convert RS232 signals to RS485, is there any schematic which I can have?

Thanks

Hi,

Did check the board with search function at the top of any forum's page ?

difference between rs-232 and rs-485

Take a look at this maxim IC, may be one of this can help you

MAX3160, MAX3161, MAX3162

rs485 twisted pair

RE Smith have several RS232 to RS485 converters with online schematics for all their devices sold.

one is used for serial communication.
another one is used for parrellel communication

differences between rs 232 485

sundarmeenakshi,

Sorry.. both the standards are for serial communication only. The difference is

supported distance for communication is less for 232 when compare to 485.

rs485 convert to rs232 by wire only

"cherukukeshav" reply is correct.

But after a while I came to conclusion that "sundarmeenakshi" statemant that RS485 is for parallel communication can be true if the term "parallel" will be defined more precisely.

RS485 enables "parallel communication", in sense that few receivers / transmitters can be connected in parallel mode to one RS485 twisted pair bus.

differences between can and rs232

There are many different topology for RS485. A two-wire layout is the most economy way.

difference rs232 rs485

in hardware architecture RS 485 used 2 cble in twisted and able to send data baud rate up to 500 kbps, long distance serial communication

RS232 used 3 cable for null modem standard and has short distance seruial communacation

Dear Sir AndrzejM,

Can you explain your point furthermore.....may be a block diagram would be in place....

Thanks in advance...

rs 232 is point to point and the RS485 is a network

Re: difference between rs232 and rs485

Dear all,
the general difference is the extended length of communication wire in RS-485 and apart from that RS-485 can perform multi node operations which RS-232 can't.

example 2 wired and four wired connection for RS-485. you can check it out

---------- Post added at 17:10 ---------- Previous post was at 17:05 ----------

There are few points which v can discuss on these are
1) Ya first main important point is RS232 is point to point communication n RS485 is multidrope communication which means ...
on RS232 u can not connect more than two device...
RS485 u can connect upto I think max 128 device theorically..(its depends on noise level as well as on distance and burd rate also)
Practicall as max 32...

2)Voltage level of RS232 is

-3 to -25 for 1
+3 to +25V for 0

while RS485 is based on differential voltage (0-5v) diff is 240mV for 1 and -240mV for 0.

3)distance limitation is 100meter for RS232 and 1Km for RS485,

4)noise immunity is high for RS485 as it is balance protocol and differencial protocol..

5)Software point of view u need to set transmit enable line in RS485 rest of the software is same...

6)pin for 232 is (Rx Tx and GND) while in case of RS485 it is (A(+) and B(-)) no need to transmit GND..signal
