[SOLVED] Practical AC to DC coverter

I need a circuit to convert the 220v ac to 5v dc.

1. Is there any better alternate for changing the level of voltage instead of transformer?
2. I need a very smooth dc. (No matter how big the circuit would be!)
3. what should I consider for Impedance matching?
 

What is your maximum current?
 

If i will advice you is better for you and safer to use step down transformer.
 

Very simple just get your small step down transformer 220v/6v ,500ma . rectified the output of 6v then use 7805 voltage regulator to get your regulated 5v supply.

Simplest would be to use a 50Hz transformer to step down the voltage, then rectify, filter and regulate the output.

Another choice is to use SMPS. However, since size is not an issue, using a 50Hz transformer will be easier (avoid complexity) and producing a smooth DC will be easier.

What should I consider for changing the amount of output current?
 

The standard 7805 can be used for up to 1A current (sufficient heatsinking must be provided).
You must make sure that the transformer can handle the current.
You must also ensure that the diodes can handle the current.
As current requirement increases, use larger capacitors.

For your required 200mA, both circuits shown will be sufficient.
