is using a Bill acceptor/Validator is the only way to detect or count money and make a program in the pc?

are there any other methods?

is the Bill Acceptor can be really interfaced to computer programming? like Visual Basic??

Please any answers are really appreciated. I will be making my thesis that will accept money as Deposit, but I still can't figure out how can I make it count the money and interfaced to the PC...

I hope there are some experts here that can answer my questions...Thank you so much
