Why use diode in xenon flash tube trigger circuit?

Neither the diode nor the 100nF capacitor (C5) do anything useful. The first time C3 is charged up, C5 will be charged as well. After that, C5 stays charged and has no further effect.

Are you sure there's nothing else connected to the junction between C5 and the diode? Otherwise they do seem pointless.

sorry about this, our contractors did not provide me with the full circuit.

Theres actually a second tube in the circuit, and the diode is connected to the anode of that.....so connecting the second tube means theres more stray capacitance at the secondary of the trigger transformer, but the extra trigger capacitor makes up for that, while the diode keeps it out of the circuit when only one tube is installed.
